Undertake a Medical Examination

An upfront medical is undertaken prior to lodging an application. If your student took an upfront medical exam, a copy of IMM 1017B form (provided by the doctor) should be uploaded with the application form.

Your student must be examined by a doctor on the list of panel physicians listed on the Canadian government website - refer to: https://secure.cic.gc.ca/PanelPhysicianMedecinDesigne/en/Home .

The medical test consists of a medical history questionnaire and physical examination. Your student may also be referred for x-rays or be required to complete laboratory tests.

Medicals are conducted by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in each respective country. Online registration is usually available and you can obtain the forms from the relevant country IOM website.

In Sri Lanka, this can also be done at ASIRI Hospital.

In Bangladesh, the service to use is the WAHAB Medical Practice for Immigration Medicals.

Your student will be advised which documents they should bring to the medical examination.

Complete the Online Visa Application

Complete the application form at https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit/apply.html.

Ensure you have all documents required for a complete application as possible to prevent delays in processing.

Biometrics Taken

Biometrics are taken after lodging your student’s visa application.

This involves providing a photo and fingerprints and must be given in person.

The steps involve: paying the biometric fee (this is included as part of the application process) - refer to https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/campaigns/biometrics/how-to-give-biometrics.html; receiving a biometric instruction letter telling you where you need to go; and getting the biometrics taken at an official biometric collection site.

Await Decision on Visa

The visa application is assessed for all the correct and complete documents.

In rare cases, your student may be asked to attend an interview or provide further information - for example, you may need to take a medical exam (if not already done so) or provide a police certificate or more detailed financial documents, if applicable.

You can use the application status tracker (https://ircc-tracker-suivi.apps.cic.gc.ca/en) to get updates about your student’s application.

Bangladesh students do not usually require an interview. Indian students do not usually require an interview.

Visa Approved

Your student will be sent a port of entry letter of introduction that says they’re allowed to study in Canada. This letter is not a study permit.

Your student will be required to send their passport to the Embassy/Consulate for the temporary resident visa stamp.

Your student will need to bring this letter and show it to a border services officer when they arrive in Canada. Your student will also be sent an electronic travel authorization (eTA) or a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) to enter Canada, if they need one.

Visa Rejected

A letter will be sent to your student with basic refusal points.
Reasons may include your student didn’t:

  • Show proof of funds to support themselves while studying in Canada.

  • Pass the medical exam (this is very rare)

  • Convince the visa officer the main purpose of coming to Canada was for study.

  • Convince the visa officer they would leave Canada at the conclusion of their study

Another reason for refusal could be that your student has a previous refusal history which is not acceptable by the High Commission/Embassy.

If applying again, your student will need to pay the visa fee again. The original visa fee is non-refundable.

Your student can also request the detailed CAIPS (Computer Assisted Immigration Processing System) notes from the High Commission/Embassy if they want more detail about the refusal. There is a fee for this.
